AAJ Mentor Program

A Key Benefit of AAJ Law Student Membership | Mentor Request Form

We know how important it is for law students to develop a mentor relationship with an AAJ attorney member; therefore, AAJ provides its law student members with a mentoring program. The mentor relationship offers law students the opportunity to work closely with experienced AAJ attorney members to obtain career advice and gain a better understanding of what is required to be a successful trial lawyer.

AAJ mentors are required to meet with mentees every 4-6 weeks for a period of one year. AAJ law student members are also invited to “shadow” a mentor at least three days throughout the year at the attorney’s office or in court.

Depending on your interests and on your mentor’s schedule, other mentor activities may include:

  • Speaking at AAJ law student chapter meetings
  • Speaking at a career panel at your law school
  • Coaching a law school team for AAJ’s Mock Trial Competition
  • Inviting you to attend depositions, courtroom hearings and similar events
  • Critiquing your resume
  • Participating in a mock employment interview with you
  • Assisting you with networking for clerkships or other employment positions
  • Talking to you about areas of practice and giving general career planning advice
  • Providing job networking suggestions if you are relocating to another city
  • Participating in the law student/mentor reception held at each AAJ Convention

Please complete the mentor request form if you are interested in being paired with an AAJ mentor. You must be an AAJ law student member to participate in the mentoring program. To join AAJ as a law student member, sign up here.
